Gallery - Coral Sea survey
In 2006, our team of ocean mapping scientists surveyed the ocean floor from Darwin-Australia to Suva-Fiji. Using the Simrad EM300 multibeam echosounder on Australia's largest blue-water research ship RV Southern Surveyor, the track crossed the Arafura Sea and Coral Sea. We acquired some of the first deep-water depth data in the far northern Great Barrier Reef, which showed great submarine canyons draining the continental shelf. After crossing the Coral Sea and passing over the tectonically active Pacific Plate, the seabed maps revealed numerous undersea volacanoes and active fault lines. These images show life onboard and some 3D images of the seabed.
