Exploration & Discovery of Australia's Oceans |
Deepreef Explorer is the website for Dr Rob Beaman and the team of marine scientists working to reveal the underwater landscape and seabed habitats of Australia's regional oceans: from the warm tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea, to the icy polar seas of Antarctica.
Look into our Projects section which showcases the latest ocean mapping research and discoveries, or visit our Gallery to view and download images and maps from our projects.
For a range of published literature about these projects, including in-depth scientific articles about our discoveries, you can access them from the Publications list.
To view and download seabed bathymetric data in a range of formats, head to the Bathymetry section, or go into the Technology menu for more information on the tools used to explore the ocean.
Contact marine geologist Dr Rob Beaman if you want to ask questions about the research, or visit Biography to follow Rob's Blog about recent ocean mapping events in the Australian region.

High-resolution depth model for the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea |
|
There is a critical lack of information about the location and extent of deep-water ecosystems and seabed habitats for about a third of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area that lies deeper than 200 m. In addition most of the inter-reefal (or between reefs) seabed shallower than 200 m on the Great Barrier Reef shelf, and many of the coral reefs themselves, have never been adequately mapped using modern echosounder techniques.
