RRRC GBR Operations Committee Meeting
August 12, 2009

Several times during the year, the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre (RRRC) hold Great Barrier Reef Operations Committee Meetings in Townsville, Australia. These meetings are an opportunity for the various marine scientists who have been awarded Marine and Tropical Sciences Research Facility (MTSRF) funding to provide updates on their research progress. I attended for the first time and gave a seminar to the assembled scientists, titled ‘3D-GBR: A high-resolution depth model for the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea’.

In the seminar, I gave a brief history of the previous digital elevation models (DEMs) developed for the Great Barrier Reef. I also highlighted the potential uses of the new depth model, such as ocean current modeling, sea-level inundation along the coast, and for helping to understand seabed ecosystems in the deep Great Barrier Reef.
