Abstract
The Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) operates the RV Falkor, an 82 m-long state-of-the-art ocean research vessel that operates year round throughout the world’s oceans. Diverse marine scientists, students, teachers, technicians and artists from many nations participate through dedicated expeditions with the RV Falkor.
In 2020 and 2021, the SOI committed the RV Falkor to a year-long series of expeditions within Australian waters involving multibeam mapping, and ROV SuBastian exploration and sampling.
This talk focusses on the three biological, geological and imagery sampling cruises in the deep Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea:
FK200429 Visioning the Coral Sea Marine Park
FK200802 Seamounts, canyons and reefs of the Coral Sea
FK200930 Northern depths of the Great Barrier Reef
The talk presents flythrough movies of the multibeam mapping data collected, and concludes with preliminary results from the DNA sequencing work conducted on the 35 black coral specimens recovered from these cruises.
