Abstract
Aerial LiDAR bathymetry is used to acquire dense bathymetry (depth) data, and is particularly useful in shallow coral reef areas to assist in compiling nautical charts for the safety of vessel navigation. On Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the Royal Australian Navy has been operating the Laser Airborne Depth Sounder (LADS) for about 20 years, based out of Cairns. This talk details the technical specifications of the current LADSII system and provides an insight to the data acquisition via the Air System data collection, then data processing in the Ground System. The seminar concludes with two case studies of reef survey sites contrasting the earlier LADSI data against the higher-resolution LADSII data.
