Research vessels come in all shapes and sizes and do many varied scientific activities. These images show just some of the research vessels that have worked within Australia’s marine jurisdiction, from shallow coastal harbours to the deeper offshore waters. Australia’s only blue-water research vessel is the RV Southern Surveyor, managed as the Marine National Facility by CSIRO in Hobart. Also based in Hobart is the RV Aurora Australis, a resupply and marine science vessel for Antarctica.
Many foreign research vessels also visit Australia during transits around the world and these vessels have frequently provided ocean mapping data for Australian scientists.
