Abstract
The ‘Crowdsourced bathymetry on the Great Barrier Reef’ project has been running since late 2018.
Ten (10) volunteer vessels along the Queensland coast, mainly commercial fishing or dive adventure vessels, are installed with TeamSurv data loggers.
Raw NMEA-0183 data are stored to USB sticks on the data loggers, capturing RMC and DBT data strings. These raw data are filtered using a python script into CSV tables of: latitude, longitude, date, time, speed, course, depth
In turn, the CSV tables are imported to Teledyne-Caris HIPS&SIPS software for sound speed adjustments, tidal corrections, and edited for noise.
The clean bathymetry data are used in Project 3D-GBR for developing 3D depth models for the Great Barrier Reef, and the development of national- and regional-scale AusBathyTopo grids.
